Project Goal

Project Goal                                                                        HELP NOW!

The goal of the project is to eradicate protein energy malnutrition (PEM) by 50% in an 18 month period in infants and children through backyard poultry production and poultry entrepreneurship.

The key objectives of the project are:

  •   To obtain 150 breeding chickens
  •    To improve through capital construction the 50’ x 10’ existing distribution center for pre-distributed poultry
  •    To construct and equip an incubation unit for freshly laid eggs
  •     To provide 25 participating households with easy to use and durable construction materials to build chicken coops in their backyard.
  •     To provide 5 breeding chickens (4 hens/ 1 cock) to each of the 25 participating households over the 18 month project (25 extra chickens are to replace diseased or dying chickens)
  •   To provide one 75 lb bag of chicken feed supplement per household during the 18 month project or twenty five 75 lb bags of feed.
  •   To hire one full time veterinarian (preferably an agricultural graduate student) to provide veterinary and pharmaceutical support for the chickens on the family farms and in the distribution center

A key strategy used to measure the effectiveness of the project activities will be the keeping of records. The following key records will always be available in the project headquarters for inspection.

  •   Records of personal history of the target families and children. This will include the name, age, address, educational level, social status of participants, average daily income, family size and others. A complete database of all the children, the parents or wards and families will be created.
  •  Interviews of the children, parents and community leaders and school authorities. The field staff will be making thousands of contacts with all the stakeholders in the project. These contacts will be documented, summarized and computerized.
  •  Reports of all meetings, workshops, seminars and sensitization activities that will include pictures and audio and video summaries. The project will facilitate and keep records of all meetings, workshops and other sensitization activities. The record will include attendance, key discussions and resolutions and future plans.
  • Records of pre and post-tests and feedback from children, community and schools authorities.
  • Records of and assessments and survey conducted to determine the stages of the project.
  • Records of assets, equipment, materials for construction and setting up of components of the project.
  • Records of productions and sales and income of production and sales activities that relates to the project.
  • Records of staff evaluation and performances
  • Records of all expenditures such as salaries, bills, allowances, fees for resource persons etc.

The following are key indicators that will determine the success of the project.

  • The number of times children eat poultry products per week in the homes.
  • The economic situation of the home.
  • The level of participation of the children, parents, wards and community leaders in the project and center activities. If the project is succeeding, there will always be positive contributions from the children, community and other participants.
  • Commitment and support for project activities of community leaders and authorities. Community labor and materials support is a key contribution to the project. When this is absent or inadequate then the success of the project is at stake.
  • Interest shown on the project by other development organizations in the country. A lot of other organizations are looking for successful projects to associate with. If the project is successful, there is the possibility that other development organizations will always want to collaborate with the project.
